Are konjac noodles healthy? Here are the benefits and uses

Konjac noodles are commonly grown in Japan, China and Southeast Asia, and often called miracle or shirataki noodles, thanks to their glucomannan fibre.

Konjac noodles are translucent, long and white. The word 'shirataki' comes from Japanese, which translates to 'white waterfall'. The noodles are made with glucomannan flour and mixed with regular water and a bit of lime water to retain their shape.

The noodles are then boiled and shaped to rice-like pieces or noodles.

In a study, konjac noodles is said to be an emerging speciality medical food to aid in the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

The study shared that, 'Long-term consumption can also reduce calories, balance body salt, and improve obesity and diabetes, to improve the sub-health of the human body.'

Another study shows it may help to lower cholesterol levels where, 'findings support the intake of ∼3 g of glucomannan for reductions in LDL cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol of 10% and 7%, respectively.'

The glucomannan fibre helps nourish the healthy bacteria in your colon, the gut flora. This fibre does not 'easily hydrolyzed by human digestive tract enzymes, and can directly enter the colon and be used by intestinal microorganisms.'

This helps to boost your immune system and reduce inflammation.

In early 2020, a woman was reported to have a drastic case of undigested konjac noodles in her system, forming a mass called bezoar in her digestive tract – only because she consumed four packages of noodles in one go. With every food intake, we'd recommend eating in moderation and per doctor's advice.
